About the Book

The book is an in-depth study of the slow but perceptible social change in backward rural areas as a result of various socio-economic developmental programmes. A lot has happened after independence, and rural India is not what it was in pre-independence days. The emergence of India as an independent sovereign state has made the relationship between social structure and rural development rather complex. The book attempts to analyze the contents of the rural development programmes as well as the response of rural society through an analysis of how the political structure of the factional situation influences development. The book also provides a sociological explanation of the intricacies of the process of social change under given circumstances and situations. This endeavour could perhaps be the modest contribution of a sociologist to planners and implementers of rural development programmes.
