About the Book

Training of Police personnel in community relations at various levels is an important and integral part of the overall training curricula of police systems all over the world. It is likely to assume further significance in view of increasing police role in community affairs on account of growing social turmoil and violence unleashed by anti-social forces of the society on one hand and high expectations of the community from police to provide protection at every stage on the other hand. Consequently, police response to the community and its behaviour pattern shall have to reflect a new approach and strategy encompassing attitudinal transformation, appropriate styles and sensitivity. Needless to say that police training shall have to be accorded a place or priority on agenda of police reforms and training in community relations shall invariably constitute an important ingredient of it. This book deals with training of police personnel in U.S.A. and India in the field of community relations and emphasizes training as an effective and efficient tool for attitudinal transformation and bringing about cordiality of relations between police and the community. Basically aimed at covering the gamut of police-community relations training scenario in the State of New York in U.S.A., the book seeks to examine utility of some of the training approaches and practices for India’s police. The book should be useful for policy planners, police personnel, social scientists, and all those who are interested in police affairs.
