About the Book

The Indira Gandhi Canal Project (IGNP) is an integrated multidisciplinary project. Its main objectives are to transform parts of the relatively inhabited desert into a culturable command area, to allot land to persons from far off places, and to create basic infrastructural facilities like roads and markets, forest cover, drinking water, agricultural extension and research, lined water courses, habitation planning, etc., so as to enable the allottees to settle and commence irrigated cultivation. Besides the history of IGNP, the present book also traces the impact of the project on agricultural production, health, socio-economic conditions and the environment. It further discusses various problems and highlight both planning and implementational issues from different perspectives.
