About the Book

There is no gainsaying the truth that travelling is the best mode of education. Moreover, it is only through travel diaries and accounts that most historical facts have been amassed and presented in a proper sequence, giving a new insight into the patterns of historical development and socio-cultural advancement over the ages in any country.

It is common knowledge that the travel accounts given by foreign travellers in India make a considerable body of historical material which can furnish to us with many startling facts and conclusions about the past. Most of these travel accounts, which are available in the form of memoirs, travelogues and diaries, were written by the foreign travellers, who were a mixed lot, comprising colonial administrators, intellectuals, adventurers, hunters, artists, poets and missionaries. Surprisingly, the majority of these travellers had shown a special interest in the Indian royalty and were fascinated by the grandeur and magnificence of royal courts, the lifestyle of women and love of art. Their accounts gave a fairly good idea of social life in royal states, their festivals, religion, customs, rites and ceremonies.

It is hoped that the work will not only add some new dimensions to the historical research but also open up new vistas for further exploration.
