About the Book
The relationship between gender and health is complex. The gender inequality entrenched in our social structure and manifested through patriarchal system has put women in an unequal position in terms of health indicators. This has deep implications for the health and development of children, and also for women themselves.
Gender and Health is a collection of articles reflecting critically upon the current status of our knowledge about gender inequalities in health and develops an agenda for future research. Situating its place in the empirical and academic attention to the overall issue of women’s health, the book examines, within the broader context of women’s health, issues pertaining to their rights, medical encounters, and different laws made to meet their health needs, specifically reproductive and mental health. The need of the hour is to mainstream gender-equality concerns in the formulation of health policy and practice.

About the Author / Editor
Madhu Nagla, an eminent medical sociologist, is Professor of Sociology at M.D. University, Rohtak. She obtained her PhD in 1988 from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She was also a Commonwealth Fellow (2004–05) at the Liverpool University (UK), Visiting Fellow at MSHParis, France (2000, 2003) and the Wageningen University, The Netherlands (2003). Her areas of interest include Sociology of Health, Gender Studies and Leisure Studies. She is the author of several books and has also published numerous research papers in national and international journals.
