About the Book

In commemoration of the 80th birth anniversary of Mallikarjun Kharge, born on July 21, 1942, this book delves into his remarkable 50-year-long political journey, closely observed by his political colleagues and friends from all walks of life. It chronicles his evolution from the President of the Gulbarga City Congress Committee in 1969 to the President of the Congress Party in 2022. The narrative encompasses his multifaceted roles as a young social and political activist, a prominent figure in Karnataka’s Congress leadership, a nine-time state legislator, a three-time member of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, a five-time minister in the Karnataka government, a two-time Union Minister, and an influential opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Above all, the book unveils his identity as a social activist deeply committed to the welfare of labourers and marginalized individuals, an institution builder in the field of education, and a person profoundly driven by a vision to transform and reconstruct the caste-ridden inequities in society. His ideals are rooted in the teachings of Buddha and Ambedkar, emphasizing values such as equality, freedom, and fraternity. These principles form the foundation of his political engagement, characterized by unwavering compassion for social justice, a dedication to the nation's economic and social progress, and a commitment to socially inclusive and pro-poor development.

The book provides a comprehensive account of his active role in securing educational, social, and economic well-being, as well as dignity, for the oppressed and downtrodden segments of Indian society. It uncovers the untold story of a man who emerged from the depths of poverty and caste discrimination to ascend to the position of President of the Congress Party, making his political journey of over half a century an unparalleled achievement in contemporary India.
