In the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, India was caught in the whirlwind of western influence through the medium of English education and a new class of intellectuals emerged as a result. This urban elite, which had the benefit of English education, drank deep at the fountain of European knowledge, culture and literature, some of them reacted to the contemporary situation through creative writings.
The present book is thus an attempt to study the Indian fiction in English with a view of find answers to certain queries pertaining to the role of western educated elite in the Indian National Movement. Or in other words it is an evaluation of the impact of national movement on Indian fiction in English. the influence of the moderate, extremist and Gandhian ideologies has also been analyzed in depth. Besides, various social problems such as casteism, women’s backwardness, untouchability and communalism have also been discussed.
