About the Book

Prepared to cater the needs of students of geography and to meet the requirements of domestic and international tourists, the present book is a modest attempt to present the physical personality of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and to explain its socio-cultural and economic milieu. Based on the latest literature and available data, the work has been supplemented with the primary information gathered by the author during his stay in the state for nearly a decade.

The book presents a detailed systematic account of the major geographical aspects of Jammu and Kashmir, with focus on structure, relief, climate, natural vegetation, soils, mineral resources, ethnic composition, population, agriculture, industries, tourism, urbanization, transport and trade. The book has been written in a lucid style and documented with neatly drawn maps and diagrams. It is hoped that the present volume will prove to be a comprehensive textbook for the teachers and students alike and will inspire them to explore further the geographical personality and cultural diversity of the northern-most state of the country.

About the Author / Editor

Majid Husain is Professor, Department of Geography, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Earlier he has also served as Head of the Department of Geography in North Eastern Hill University, University of Kashmir and Jamia Millia Islamia. Having a high degree of commitment for teaching and research, Dr. Husain has an unparalleled ability of simplifying the difficult concepts of geography and capacity to analyze the enormous facts in a cogent manner. Dr. Husain’s writings are widely acclaimed and read with interest both in India and abroad.
