Gopala Sarana was trained in anthropology by Professor D.N. Majumdar at Lucknow University. Later on he obtained his doctoral degree from Harvard University. He began his teaching career in 1955 and after teaching for nearly forty years he retired from Lucknow University. In between he also taught at Punjab University, University of California, Santa Barbara (USA) and Karnatak University, Dharwad. He has published scores of research papers in national and international journals. He is also the author of several books.
